In RENAISSANCE, the South Tyrolean artist also presents a new sculpture shaped like a buoy and made of glass recycled from an earlier work. In 2021, AliPaloma installed in the fortress of Fortezza a wall of crystal glass bricks, which she then smashed during a performance—an emancipatory gesture carried out in response to the invulnerable architecture of the fortification and the patriarchal social structures behind it. The glass fragments created by this act of resistance were remelted and recast into a symbol of solidarity: The buoy represents the need for collective support in the ongoing struggle for equality and emancipation, as it can only safely guide ships as part of a network. Buoys also always float, no matter what ocean currents and challenges they face. They never sink, just like the queer feminist movement. (Leonie Radine)
